Beauden Barrett vs Richie Mo'unga - everyone has their view on the All Blacks number 10 selection debate, including the man who owned the jersey for so long.

Two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter may be a Crusaders man, through and through, but he's thrown his vote behind the Hurricanes incumbent.

"I'd be picking Beauden," he told Newshub. "He's done amazing things over the past few years.

"He's really directed and guided the All Blacks around, and has been a big part of the reason they've been so successful."

Barrett has dominated the position, since Carter stood down from the national side after the 2015 Rugby World Cup, where the latter started at first-five and the former was a strong contributor off the bench.

Carter was the IRB Player of the Year that year, but Barrett has won that same award over the two subsequent years, consolidating his claims as the best player on the planet.

While utility Damian McKenzie has emerged as his All Blacks deputy, Mo'unga has also pushed his case, with consecutive championships campaigns behind the Crusaders pack.

All three have been named in the national squad to prepare for the upcoming Rugby Championship.

"I'm so happy for Richie and the fact that debate's going on, because he's had such a fantastic season," said Carter.

"He's a great player and I got to work with him for a couple of years with the Crusaders, so to see him and the way he's been playing, I'm really proud of what he's achieved.

"We're pretty spoilt for choice, really."

Carter, 36, knows all too well about competition for the 10-jersey. Over the final years of his career, he had to repulse strong challenges from Barrett, Aaron Cruden and Lima Sopoaga for his All Blacks starting spot.

"Learning from that experience, when there was that competition and young players nipping at your heels, it motivates you and makes you want to work even harder," he told Newshub.

"I'm sure all the guys involved in those selection debates will be working extremely hard, because they want to be there wearing the black number-10 jersey.

"The team's more important than the individual and I know both those guys will grow each other.

"It sounds strange, because you're competing for a position, but even when younger guys were competing for my position, they'd have opportunities in certain games and you wanted them to do well.

"I think that's the strength of the All Black environment, where players are helping their peers and their competition."
