Sprint legend Usain Bolt has confirmed a trial stint with A-League football club Central Coast Mariners.

The Mariners announced the news on their Twitter feed, telling their 33,000 followers Bolt would train with them for an indefinite period, which Bolt then retweeted on to his nearly five million followers.

Bolt also shared the news with his 8.6 million Instagram followers - a following that is easily the biggest of any A-League player.

"I am very excited about coming to Australia, and would like to thank the owner and management of Central Coast Mariners for giving me this opportunity," Bolt said.

"It has been my dream to play professional football, and I know that it will involve a lot of hard work and training to get to the level required to play and make an impact in the A-League."

Bolt's agreement with the Mariners contains no guarantee of a professional contract.

An athlete with Bolt's following will bring significant off-field opportunities to the Mariners and they'll have two months until the A-League season starts to decide whether the eight time Olympic champion will benefit them on the field.

If Bolt does earn a professional contract with the Mariners, he could grace New Zealand before the end of the year, with the Wellington Phoenix set to host the Mariners on December 15 at Westpac Stadium.
