Baseball: Aggressive baseball key in attracting Kiwis to Auckland Tuatara - Steve Mintz

You can expect the Auckland Tuatara to provide an aggressive style of baseball when they enter the Australian league in November.

The fledgling franchise is the first professional baseball outfit based in New Zealand, and will be coached by former Major League pitcher Steve Mintz.

The American spent time with sixth different MLB teams, including the Boston Red Sox, in an eight-year career, before turning to coaching in 2002.

The 49-year-old is currently the pitching coach with the Down East Wood Ducks, a minor league affiliate of the Texas Rangers.

Mintz, who has experience managing in the Australian Baseball League with the Adelaide Bite, wants to provide a product that New Zealand sports fans will gravitate to.

"We want to fight. Win lose or draw it's about putting on a good show," Mintz says.

"We want to hustle, to fight and do everything we can to win baseball games.

"We are up for the challenge and we want to put the best people in place so that the public of New Zealand have a product they can be proud of and get behind.

"We want to turn this into a great thing for the country."

Mintz is currently in New Zealand on a flying visit to scout talent.

The Tuatara are holding trials in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington this weekend, hoping to unearth some untapped Kiwi talent.

The North Carolina native said it's an open platform for any talented New Zealand athletes to show off their ability.

"We have basically asked the whole country to come and try out," Mintz says.

"We are hoping to find some hidden talent that maybe no one in New Zealand has heard about. If its cricket, softball, rugby or whatever we are just excited to hopefully find a selection of fine athletes."

Pitching is an area where some pundits have speculated the Tuatara may look abroad to fill the roster.

However with three quality arms already signed, Mintz believes they aren't too far away from a strong rotation.

Kiwi's Jimmy Boyce and Scott Cone have inked deals with the club, while former Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Josh Collmenter has also committed to play.

"We have a handful of good pitchers here in New Zealand, but we would definitely be looking to upgrade the backend of our bullpen. We are happy with the core group of pitching we have here in New Zealand.

"We would love to add another left-handed pitcher and a few bigger arms for the seventh, eighth and ninth innings."

Mintz expects to have the final playing roster finalised by the end of the month as the team works towards its inaugural series against the Perth Heat on November 15.

Mintz has lofty goals for the 2018/2019 season - pinpointing the playoffs as a realistic target.

"Everyone will arrive in Auckland by November 2nd and then we will have a little time together, a sort of mini-spring training camp and then we have an exhibition weekend before we open the season in Perth.

"It's important we have the roster finalised within the next couple weeks so that we can figure out what we are working with and be ready to go when we all get together in November.

"We won't be making any excuses.

"We will take it to them and play as hard as we can. We want to get to the playoffs and earn an opportunity to win the Claxton Shield.

The Tuatara's first home series is scheduled for November 22-25 against the Brisbane Bandits.
