Kiwi cyclist Patty Bevin has New Zealand off to a medal start at the UCI world championships, helping his BMC Racing outfit to third in the team time trial.

The combination of Bevin, Damiano Caruso, Rohan Dennis, Stefan Klug, Greg Van Avermaet and Tejay van Garderen finished 20 seconds behind winners Quick-Step Floors over the 62.8km course and two seconds adrift of second-placed Sunweb.

BMC reached the first checkpoint at 22.8km in second place, behind Mitchelton-Scott, but emerged from a steep 4.6km climb in third, behind Sunweb and Quick-Step, who blitzed the final 20km for victory.

The team time trial is the only world championship event still contested by trade teams - as opposed to national teams - although this is the final year of that format.

It's also the last race for BMC Racing, who will merge with CCC-Sprandi-Polkowice for the 2019 season.
