English Premier League: Watford shock Spurs, Burnley still winless

  • 03/09/2018

Watford maintained their perfect start to the English Premier League season, rallying to shock Tottenham on Monday morning (NZ time).

Both teams headed into the match unbeaten, but Watford came away with all three points, thanks to Craig Cathcart’s 76th-minute winner at Vicarage Road.

Tottenham took the lead early in the second half, when Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure put the ball into his own net.

That spurred the Hornets to life and they drew level 16 minutes later through captain Troy Deeney, before Cathcart scored from a corner.

It was Watford's first league win over Tottenham since May 1987.

Elsewhere, Chris Wood's Burnley remain stuck in the relegation zone, after a 2-0 defeat against a 10-man Manchester United.

Romelu Lukaku scored a first-half brace for United to seal the win at Turf Moor.

Paul Pogba missed a chance to make it 3-0, when Joe Hart saved his penalty attempt.

United also played 30 minutes with 10-men, after Marcus Rashford was sent off for violent conduct off the ball.

Wood played 84 minutes for the Clarets, who are without a win this season and sit in 19th, one spot above Winston Reid's West Ham United.

Meanwhile, Arsenal secured their first away win of the season, scraping past Cardiff City 3-2.

Alexandre Lacazette’s 81st-minute goal proved the difference between the two sides in their clash in south Wales.

The Gunners led twice, through Shkodran Mustafi's header and a curling effort from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, before Lacazette crashed home the winner nine minutes from time.

Victor Camarasa and Danny Ward scored both Cardiff's goals in the first half.
