Football: Cristiano Ronaldo sent off for Juventus in Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo's first Champions League appearance for Juventus has lasted just 29 minutes as the competition's record scorer was sent off against Valencia.

The Portuguese forward was shown a straight red card by German referee Felix Brych after a seemingly innocuous tackle on Valencia defender Jeison Murillo in the box on Thursday (NZ time).

Ronaldo then got up and appeared to grab Murillo's head which caught the attention of the official behind the goal.

Brych consulted with his assistant and opted to show the red card.

Ronaldo looked stunned as he was dismissed, falling to the ground, and was close to tears as he walked off.

It was Ronaldo's first red card in Europe's elite club competition in his 154th game, and the decision means he is set to miss a return to Old Trafford when Juventus plays Manchester United next month.

Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid during the offseason and scored his first two goals for Juventus this past weekend in a 2-1 win over Sassuolo in Serie A.

But the 33-year-old's brace was overshadowed by a red card to teammate Douglas Costa for spitting at Federico di Francesco late in the match.

Despite playing with 10 men, Juventus beat Valencia 2-0 at the Mestalla Stadium.
