Formula One: Marcus Ericsson survives horror crash at Italian Grand Prix practice

Formula One driver Marcus Ericsson amazingly walked away unscathed from a huge smash during practice for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday morning (NZ time), after hitting a wall at 350km/h.

The Sauber driver lost control of his car as he attempted to brake and crashed into the barriers on the left of the track, before rolling over four times in the air.

Surprisingly, the Swedish racer got out of the car unscathed.

The crash led to a red flag at the practice session, as the track was cleared and the smashed-up car was removed from the track.

"I am all fine," Ericsson said, in a video posted to social media.

"It was a big one, the safety of the cars is incredible. Hopefully, tomorrow, we should be back fighting and I look forward to that."

Ericsson was cleared by doctors to race for the remainder of the weekend

His accident came five days after teammate Charles Leclerc emerged unscathed from a terrifying first-corner accident during the Belgium Grand Prix.

The news was better for Kiwi Brendon Hartley, though, who got through the first two practices without any damage.

During the first session, he completed 17 laps and recorded the fourth-fastest time, which was followed up with the 16th-fastest time during the second session.

"I was P4 this morning in the wet and momentarily held P1, which was nice," said Hartley.

"The car performed very well in the intermediate conditions this morning, but we had a small issue with our car in Practice Two, which meant we sat in the garage for a long time, due to some problems on the bodywork.

"We missed out on some running time, but I would still say it was a good day and we're in the mix."
