Golf: Lydia Ko finishes tied for 10th at Evian Championship

Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has finished in a tie for 10th at the final women's golf Major of the year - the Evian Championship in France.

The 2015 winner carded a four-under 67 in her final round on Monday (NZ time) to finish eight under for the tournament.

Ko finished four shots behind American Angela Stanford, who claimed her maiden Major title, after compatriot and long-time leader Amy Olson made a double-bogey on the final hole.

Olson was 13-under heading onto the final hole and a par would have won the title, a bogey would have sent it into a playoff, but she ended up in a four-way tie for second.

Stanford ended her long wait for a Major title, 15 years after finishing runner-up at the US Women's Open.

She becomes the lone US golfer this year to capture a Major title and the first since Danielle Kang's triumph at the Women's PGA Championship in July 2017.

"You know, I know me very well and I did a bunch of stupid stuff, but deep down, I'm a fighter, I'm a grinder and I've always been that," she said.

"I'm grateful and so happy for everybody at home, everybody that's all cheered for me and never gave up on me."

Ko’s round consisted of five birdies on the first, fifth, ninth, 13th and 17th holes, with her only blemish coming with a bogey on the seventh.

She finished strongly, aftering tying for 41st with a one-over 72 opening round. That was backed up with a one-under 70, second and a four-under 67 in the third round.
