Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko is well off the pace after the first round of the final women's golf major of the year, the Evian Championship in France.

The 2015-winner carded a one-over 72 on Friday (NZ time) and is tied for 41st, seven shots behind the leaders.

Spain's Carlota Ciganda and Maria Torres from Puerto Rico led the tournament after both shot six-under 65s around the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains.

Ko started her round with four pars but had back-to-back bogeys midway through the front nine before carding an eagle on the ninth to be even par midway through her round. Two bogeys and a birdie on the back nine saw her finish one-over.

Despite the shaky round, the 21-year-old is still well above the projected cut-line of three-over.

Meanwhile, Ryan Fox shot a one-under 70 to sit tied for 65th at the KLM Open in The Netherlands.

Fox is six shots behind China's Ashun Wu, who's the sole leader at seven under.

Fellow New Zealander, Josh Geary, is a further two shots back from Fox after carding a one-over 72.
