Golf: Oliver Fisher shoots European Tour record at Portugal Masters

English golfer Oliver Fisher carded the first sub-60 round in European Tour history at the Portugal Masters on Saturday (NZ time).

The 30-year-old made 10 birdies and an eagle for a 12-under second round in Vilamoura, and just missed out on going even lower on the final hole.

He had a birdie putt on the 18th for a 58, which would have equalled the lowest round in professional golf, but just missed.

"It feels great, I started great, and I kept it going," he said after his round.

"I started off with three straight birdies and then kept it going. I'm just pleased that I two-putted there from 40-foot on the last. It was a great day.

"It was fun, I tried to enjoy it, and thankfully I got over the line."

Since the formation of the European Tour in 1972, there have been 19 rounds of 60, while American Jim Furyk hit a round of 58 on the PGA Tour in 2016.

Fisher started the day eight shots off the lead on level par, but his outstanding round has propelled him into a tie for the lead alongside Australian Lucas Herbert.

Kiwi duo Josh Geary and Ryan Fox are both competing in the event in Portugal.

Both shot a three-under 68 second round, with Geary currently in a tie for 25th at six-under par, while Fox is in 52nd at four-under par.
