The New Zealand's men's ice hockey team have made history on Friday night after they beat Australia 6-1 at the Winter Games in Queenstown on Friday.

The five-goal win was the Ice Blacks' largest-ever margin of victory over Australia as well as their first-ever series win against their trans-Tasman rivals.

The thrashing came a day after they beat the Mighty Roos 4-2 in the opening game of the series.

Alex Polozov led the way for New Zealand, scoring two goals and claiming two assists in the win.

Dale Harrop, Matthew Schneider, Chris Eaden and Jordan Challis also found the back of the net.

New Zealand will look for a clean sweep in the three-game series in the final match on Saturday night.
