Mitre 10 Cup: Scrappy Tasman overcome Manawatu

  • 20/09/2018

Tasman has joined Auckland atop the Mitre 10 Cup standings after claiming a 29-19 in over Manawatu in Palmerston North on Wednesday.

The Mako were made to work all night by the Turbos but eventually got home, scoring four tries to Manawatu's three.

Facing two games in five days, Tasman and Manawatu left many of their best players on the bench for the fixture.

That included All Blacks forward Jackson Hemopo, who played 30 minutes for the Turbos in his first match since the 'game of three halves'.

With Liam Squire ruled out for the remainder of the Rugby Championship, there is a strong possibility Hemopo will be named in the travelling squad for the Argentina and South African legs of the tournament.

Hemopo's teammate, Otere Black made his long-awaited return from an ACL injury, playing the last half hour.

Both sides two first-half tries with Jamie Spowart Levi Aumua scoring for Tasman while Sam Malcolm and Michael Alaalatoa scored for the hosts, but it was the Mako who led 14-12 at the break.

Tasman brought on their key personnel early in the second half in Will Jordan and Mitch Hunt, with both making an immediate impact as they both scored tries for the Mako in the space of eight minutes.

Michael Tagicakibau scored the Turbo's third to set up a thrilling finish, but a late penalty goal to Tasman put the result beyond doubt.

Tasman is now tied with Auckland in the premiership, while Manawatu continues to remain trapped in second-to-last with just one win in six games so far this year.

Both teams are back in action on Sunday with the Mako hosting Counties Manukau, while the Turbos face Wellington.
