NRL: Club legend Simon Mannering believes he leaves Warriors in good hands

Former Warriors captain Simon Mannering is officially retired.

The 301 game veteran played his final game for the club in their 27-12 defeat to the Penrith Panthers on Saturday.

Penrith playmaker James Maloney tore his old team apart, as they came back from 12-2 down to score 25 unanswered points in Sydney.

It wasn't the perfect send-off Mannering was hoping for, but he feels he's leaving the club in good shape as the 32-year-old ponders what to do next.

"We're heading in the right direction. We're not the finished product yet," he told Newshub.

"It is a good experience for the guys playing finals footy because lots of them have never played it and hopefully they can learn something from that.

"They're heading in the right direction and still plenty to work on. I'm sure they'll carry that on into next season."

The Warriors ended up with 15 wins during the season - tied for second-most in the club's history. They finished with eight away wins - which equals their most in a season.

Mannering said it will take a while to sink in that he is now a retired athlete.

"I've been a lucky man to have been at the club for so long and be a professional athlete for the last 13 years.

"I didn't think I'd be heading down that road as a youngster. It's sad to be finishing but I'm excited for the next part of my life and see where it takes me and my family.

"Once the guys get back into training for next year, that is when It will hit home knowing I won't have to be there. In a couple of months when I'm looking for a real job, that's when it will hit home."
