With his sport under intense scrutiny for alleged match-fixing, long-serving Harness Racing NZ chief executive Edward Rennell has resigned.

Earlier this month, several racing identities appeared in court in Christchurch and Palmerston North, after a 17-month investigation known as Operation Inca and raids on harness-racing properties.

Rennell's departure doesn't seem to be directly connected to the investigation. He has served more than two decades in the role and won't step down until December 19.

"It has been a privilege to lead Harness Racing New Zealand for the last 21 years," Rennell said in his resignation statement. "It has been more than just a job.

"I have a real passion for the industry and a strong desire to see it thrive. I will continue to work hard over the next few months to help guide the industry through what is a difficult time and leave the organisation in a strong position for my replacement."
