Rugby Championship: New Pumas coach Mario Ledesma tries to tone down passion

As the music pumps at training, the Argentine passion for life is obvious and arriving in sunny Nelson has only enhanced it.

"The weather is beautiful, different to Auckland, eh?" laughs captain Augustin Creevy.

But new coach Mario Ledesma is trying to rein in that famous fervour during his first year in charge.

"I think he changed our mentality," says Creevy.

Ledesma learned a more scientific approach during three years as Australia's forwards coach. That took the Jaguares into Super Rugby's playoffs and he's now implementing it with the national side.

"We're not used to respecting systems and processes from one week to the other," he says. "Obviously, discipline was a major issue.

"All that passion and stuff, that’s a good thing - just put the other thing on top."

He's also reviving what used to be Argentina's strength.

"We haven't had a strong scrum for the last couple of years," says Ledesma. "You build a house from the foundations up."

It paid off with a victory against the Springboks two weeks ago, featuring a three-try, long-range blitz.

"They're prepared to go long phases to put you under pressure and keep the ball alive to create opportunities for their backs, who are pretty classy players," says Codie Taylor.

There is one downside to better preparation when chasing an unlikely first win against New Zealand.

"There are no excuses tomorrow," chuckles Ledesma. "I wish I had one, but no excuses."
