Rugby: Julian Savea's wife slams French rugby on social media

Former All Black Julian Savea's wife has blasted the standard of French rugby after her husband's recent outing for his new side, Toulon.

The veteran wing joined the Top14 giants at the end of the Hurricanes' 2018 Super Rugby campaign after a storied career with both the Wellington-based franchise and the All Blacks.

During a heavy 37-10 loss to Stade Francais on Monday (NZ time), Fatima Savea fired off a series of tweets in defence of her husband, slamming the overall quality of the competition.

"When you can see the frustration on your husband's face... I swear this team doesn't know how to pass," she posted on Twitter.

"Rugby on this side of the world is very behind. I feel Julian's pain out there on the field."

After accusing his new teammates of being incapable of passing, she also took aim at the referee.

"These refs are a joke," she wrote.

"WTF is going?"

It was a rough outing for Savea, who was yellow-carded late in the match following an altercation with opposition flanker Sekou Macalou.

The exchange resulted in the French international’s brother charging onto the field from the stands to confront Savea, which forced both former All Blacks teammate Liam Messam and security to step in as protection.

Toulon is languishing near the bottom of the Top14 standings, with just one win from their first four games.
