Rugby League: Warriors create history with inaugural women's win

Warriors winger Hilda Mariu has created a slice of rugby league history, with the opening try of the NRL Women's Premiership in Sydney.

And her team backed up that achievement with an inaugural victory against the Sydney Roosters to stake an early claim for the women's Grand Final on September 30.

Facing the pre-season favourites in their competition debut, the Warriors were on top early, imposing their physicality on their rivals through repeat sets.

After just eight minutes, Mariu took advantage of a Roosters turnover to open the scoring with a try in the right corner.

With the lion's share of possession, they continued to pressure the home side and were rewarded with another try to lock Luisa Gago in the 17th minute, after another repeat set. Apii Nicholls' conversion from near the posts extended the advantage into double figures.

But just before half-time, the Roosters struck back, with half Isabelle Kelly edging across field, before spying a gap and stretching across the try-line.

Holding a 10-4 advantage at the break, it was then a matter of the Warriors protecting their lead over the closing half hour.

The Sydneysiders probably came closest to breaking the second-half deadlock, but committed Warriors defence frustrated their efforts to preserve their win.

In the closing seconds, Kelly looked to set her backs charging to the line to lock the game up, but was smashed by Warriors skipper Laura Mariu and lost the ball.

The Warriors, who arrived only a few hours before kick-off due to a lightning storm, were able to hold on for victory.

"It was very intense, there was no resting," reflected Warriors hooker Krystal Rota afterwards. "It was a very physical game, as you can see.

"We just planned to go up the middle with our forwards and get physical, and then finish on the edges."

The Warriors will now face the other two teams in the competition - St George Illawarra Dragons and Brisbane Broncos - with the top two sides qualifying for the final.
