Former world number one Venus Williams will return to Auckland for her fifth appearance at the ASB Classic in January.

The seven-time Grand Slam winner missed the 2017 edition after choosing to extend her off-season, and tournament director Karl Budge said he was thrilled to have the world number 16 back in the mix.

"It's great to have Venus back," said Budge. "She has been a special part of this tournament for a number of years and we missed her this year.

"She is still at the top of the game and how good would it be if she could capture career title number 50 here in Auckland."

The American took home the title in 2015 with a win over Caroline Wozniacki in the final.

Williams has notched a 49 WTA singles titles through her storied career, the second most of any active player (behind sister Serena), 14 major doubles titles and four Olympic Gold Medals.

The competition gets underway December 31.
