All Blacks: Jack Goodhue named to start at centre against Springboks

The All Blacks have made four changes to their starting side to face the Springboks in Pretoria on Sunday morning (NZ time).

Jack Goodhue has been given a chance to prove he's the All Blacks' top centre, after being named to start in the 13 jersey.

Goodhue, who was rested for last week's win over Argentina, will start in the midfield, alongside Sonny Bill Williams, with Ryan Crotty coming off the bench.

Last time Crotty came off the bench was against Argentina, during the 2015 Rugby Championship.

Anton Leinert-Brown misses out, after playing in all but one test this year.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said he wanted to see how Goodhue played with Williams.

"We know lots about Ryan and Jack, but not Sonny and Jack," said Hansen.

"All year, we've been trying to work out what our best combination is, heading into the future, and this is an opportunity to do that."

Aaron Smith returns as starting halfback, with TJ Perenara moving to the bench in the only other change to the All Blacks backline.

Ben Smith, Waisake Naholo and Rieko Ioane all keep their spots in the back three, with Beauden Barrett starting at first-five.

Two changes in the forwards see Kieran Read returning to captain the team from the back of the scrum, with Ardie Savea moving back to the bench.

Owen Franks also comes back into the starting side, with Ofa Tuungafasi resuming his usual role as an impact player in place of Angus Ta'avao.

Franks will pack down with Codie Taylor and Karl Tu'inukuafe in the front row, with Sam Whitelock and Scott Barrett partnering at lock for the second consecutive test. Shannon Frizell and Sam Cane start on the flanks.

On the bench, Richie Mo'unga keeps his spot, with Hansen electing not to play Damian McKenzie, who missed the Pumas test due to a family bereavement.

"Damien has to fly home from Argentina and back, so he's had an extra flight," said Hansen. "To throw a game in there as well probably doesn’t need that."

Last time these two teams met, the All Blacks missed a chance to win the game with a drop goal - they elected to chase a match-winning try, but failed to score.

Hansen is confident they'll do things differently this time.

"[South Africa] are a confident side at the moment. They've grown another arm and a leg since they knocked us over in Wellington.

"If we need to take a drop goal, I'm sure we'll take one this time. If we're eight points behind with a penalty in front, I think we'll take it."
