Tall Blacks coach Paul Henare is reportedly on his way back to the ANBL.

According to Stuff, Henare has accepted an offer to join the ranks of defending champions Melbourne United, where he'll coach alongside former Breakers cohort, Dean Vickerman, for the rest of the 2018/19 season.

The 39-year-old will initially sign a one-year deal, with a view to extending that term at the end of the campaign.

His decision to step away from the Auckland-based Breakers during the off-season was a surprise to many, after he failed to agree to terms on a deal with the new ownership group.

It's understood the role won't have any impact on his duties with the New Zealand national side.

Vickerman coached Henare during the Breakers' run to the championship in 2014/15 as an assistant with Andrej Lemanis, before Henare made the transition to coaching upon retirement.

He'll replace United assistant Simon Mitchell, who's understood to become the head coach of expansion franchise, South Melbourne United, when they join the league in 2019/20.

Henare's Breakers were eliminated by Melbourne United in the semi-finals of the 2017/18 ANBL playoffs.

On Sunday, the Breakers defeated Melbourne United 88-81 to claim their first win of the ANBL season.
