Bathurst 2018: Kiwi Scott McLaughlin puts 'Great Race' ahead of championship

Forget testing and tuning, the build-up to Bathurst has been about simply staying on track.

There's been little chance to search for speed, with all five practices held in the wet.

Kiwi Scott McLaughlin sits second in the Supercars standings, but Bathurst means even more.

"For me, the championship is in the back of my mind," he told Newshub. "But I want to win this probably more.

"It's a race that I hold really high on my list to win, so if I'm second on the last lap and have a chance to win, I'll definitely have a crack."

This year, McLaughlin has every chance.

"It's probably the second year that I've come in with a car that's 100 percent capable of winning and I understand that bit more."

No driver has ever rounded the Mount Panorama corners quicker. In last year's unforgettable shootout, McLaughlin set the new 'Lap of the Gods'.

But his golden Bathurst lasted just two laps, when he spun out on the final corner.

This time, his Holden rivals are favourites and McLaughlin is out to make amends. He's learned pole position is easily squandered and all that really matters is the end of the race.

"It's nice to have done a pole and got pole here now - I can tick that off the list - but obviously, the main race is Sunday and I want to get that done."

At the pinnacle of racing, the peak is a podium, not a pole.
