Boxing: Kiwi heavyweight Junior Fa to face Argentinian on Parker undercard

  • 26/10/2018

Kiwi heavyweight boxing prospect Junior Fa will face former world cruiserweight contender Rogelio Omar Rossi of Argentina on the undercard of Joseph Parker vs Alexander Flores in Christchurch in December.

And Parker's promoters have challenged the former Tongan representative to show he's worthy of a crack at their man.

Fa, 29, has just entered camp with WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as the American prepares to meet Briton Tyson Fury on December 1.

"This is a huge opportunity for me, for sure," says Fa, who boasts an 15-0 and sits 10th on WBO world rankings.

"I'm going to grab it with both hands."

Fa's manager, Mark Keddell, claims the fight will bring his fighter one step closer to a showdown with Parker, the former WBO world champion, whom he beat twice as an amateur.

"Junior has taken a path through America, rather than through new Zealand, like Joseph did," says Keddell. "Their paths are now converging.

"Joseph has done incredibly well and everyone has a huge amount of respect for him, but there are holes in his game - everyone can see that.

"When the time is right, Junior will expose those holes."

Southpaw Rossi has a record of 20 wins/six losses/one draw and challenged German Marko Huck for the WBO cruiserweight title seven years ago, suffering a sixth-round knockout.

Duco Events head David Higgins says the time has come for Junior Fa to "put up or shut up".

"Junior is hugely talented, but he has blown hot and cold as a professional fighter. He's earned his chance to step up onto the big stage... let's see what he does with it."

Parker faces Flores at Horncastle Arena on December 15.
