Cricket: Blackcaps fall short in opening T20 against Pakistan

  • 01/11/2018

The Blackcaps' first match under new coach Gary Stead has ended in a two-run defeat at the hands of Pakistan on Thursday (NZ time) in their opening T20 match at Abu Dhabi.

Set 149 to win, New Zealand could only manage 146/6 from their 20 overs at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

New Zealand were well on course, but a dreadful spell in the middle of their chase cost them dearly in the end.

Having won the toss, Pakistan finished on 148/6, with Mohammad Hafeez (45 runs) and captain Sarfraz Ahmed (34) leading the way for the hosts.

Imad Wasim finished on 14 for the hosts, but 10 of his runs came off the final two balls of Pakistan's innings, which proved costly in the end.

Adam Milne was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers, finishing with 2/28, while Ish Sodhi collected 1/24.

Colin Munro got New Zealand's chase off to a wonderful start and they were cruising at 79/1, until the 31-year-old was caught for 58 with 8.3 overs remaining.

That started a poor spell, where New Zealand lost three wickets for 10 runs, with Kane Williamson (11), then Colin de Grandhomme (six) also dismissed.

Ross Taylor (42*) did his best to anchor the Kiwis late in the fixture, but needing a six off the final ball to send the match into a super over, he could only manage a four and the game was over.

World number one Pakistan have now won 12 of their last 13 T20 internationals, including five straight against Australia.

The match was also New Zealand's first since the test series against England back in March.

The second T20 is scheduled for Saturday (NZ time).
