An Usman Khawaja century has helped Australia hang on for a draw in the first test of their series against Pakistan in Dubai.

Set an unlikely 462 for victory, Australia batted out 140 overs and survived with two wickets in hand, closing day five on 362/8.

Khawaja batted close to nine hours for his knock of 141, and he received solid support from Travis Head and captain Tim Paine, who scored half-centuries.

Tailender Nathan Lyon also showed some grit, facing 48 balls for five runs, as Australia batted out the last 12 overs with just two wickets in hand.

Earlier, a Pakistan victory had looked certain, after the hosts picked up a huge first innings lead of 280, but they couldn't capitalise.

The two sides now meet in the second and final test in Abu Dhabi starting Tuesday.
