South African-born Devon Conway has continued to build on his 15th first-class century, surpassing 200 runs for Wellington in their first inning against Otago in Plunket Shield play.

The left-handed top-order batsman and wicketkeeper brought up his century - his second for the Firebirds - off 219 balls on Wednesday's opening day at the Basin Reserve and combined with fellow South African Malcolm Nofal (110) in a fifth-wicket stand of 192.

On Thursday afternoon, he brought up his double-century off 388 balls, including 26 fours and two sixes. Wellington promptly declared at 509/5, with Conway two runs shot of his career high on 203.

Conway, 27, had amassed nearly 100 first-class matches, most in his native country, when he moved to New Zealand last September, hoping to eventually qualify for Blackcaps selection. He still has two more years until that happens, but is determined to follow in the footsteps of fast bowler Neil Wagner.

"I wanted to make a life here and I definitely would like to play for the Black Caps in the future," he told Stuff earlier this year.

Conway and Nofal are among 13 South African-born players on NZ Cricket's books this season, including internationals Wagner, BJ Watling and Colin Munro.

Elsewhere, Blackcaps all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme also brought up his 12th first-class century, when he reached triple figures for Northern Districts against Canterbury at the Hagley Oval.
