Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been charged by the International Cricket Council with two breaches of its anti-corruption code.

The 49-year-old has been accused of failing to co-operate with an investigation conducted by the games governing body.

The former all-rounder is regarded as one of the greatest limited overs cricketers of his generation, starring for the 1996 World Cup winning Sri Lankan side in the role of opening batsman.

Jayasuriya has also been charged with obstructing the investigation by "concealing, tampering with or destroying evidence."

The BBC reports that the charges against the 110-test match veteran pertained to him refusing to hand over his mobile phone to ICC authorities.

According to the BBC, Jayasuriya was chairman of selectors to the national side during the investigation period.

He has 14 days to respond to the charges.
