Cricket: White Ferns slump to nine-wicket defeat to Australia

  • 06/10/2018

A stunning catch helped lift Australia to a nine-wicket victory over the White Ferns in the third and final Twenty20 International series match on Friday.

The White Ferns were no match for the world number one side in Canberra, as Ellyse Perry (4-21) and Sophie Molineux (3-11) tore through the woeful New Zealand batters.

New Zealand's openers put on 29 for the first wicket, but the White Ferns lost 6/16, before being rolled for just 103.

One of the wickets taken was a stunning one-handed diving catch from Rachael Haynes, which helped spark the Ferns slump.

The only White Ferns batter to fire was Katey Martin, whose defiant unbeaten 35 off 34 balls included three of the innings' seven fours.

Australia batter Alyssa Healy then blasted 67 runs to help the hosts reach the target set by New Zealand in 12.3 overs.

The result means Australia wins the series 3-0, winning the first two games by six wickets.

White Ferns captain Amy Satterthwaite was bitterly disappointed with her team's efforts.

"It was disappointing," she said. "At least in the first games, we were more competitive, but the way we finished today was very disappointing."

She admitted the team has plenty to work on before the upcoming World Twenty20 tournament in the Caribbean.

"There are areas in all three areas of the game we need to review and improve in the next three weeks.

"We've got the skill sets, but we just need to build on that and simplifying some of our game plans."

The White Ferns' opening World Twenty20 match is against Sri Lanka on November 4.
