Kiwi golfer Nick Voke is leading the Clearwater Bay Open in China, after the opening round on Friday (NZ time).

Voke shot an opening-round five-under 65 to lead Cristiano Terrangni of Italy and Oskar Arvidsson of Sweden by one shot.

The 23-year-old's round consisted of four birdies, a bogey and an eagle on the 18th.

"I played some smart golf out there," Voke said, after his round.  "It was great to get that eagle on that final hole - it was a great way to end. "

The tournament is the final event of the PGA Tour Series-China, with the top five overall on the Order of Merit gaining a card for the Web.com Tour.

Voke sits fifth on the Order of Merit and it would take a catastrophic change in form over the next few days for him to lose his chance at playing on America's second-tier tour in 2019.

Meanwhile, Ryan Fox is well down the leaderboard at the latest European Tour event in Surrey. The Aucklander had a day to forget, as he sits in a tie for 97th, carding an opening-round three-over 75 opening round at the British Masters at the Walton Heath Golf Club.

The 31-year-old started his round with two bogeys in his first three holes, but bounced back nicely with back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes to sit even-par midway through his round.

Two more birdies on the 11th and 12th holes put the Aucklander in a good position, but things quickly took a turn for the worst.

He bogeyed the 13th, followed by a double bogey on the 15th, and then two more bogeys on the 16th and 17th.

The poor finish to the round sees him trail leading English trio Matt Wallace, Tommy Fleetwood and Eddie Pepperell by eight shots.

Elsewhere, Lydia Ko is tied for 11th, after her first round at the latest LPGA event in Incheon, Korea.

The 21-year-old shot an opening-round two-under 70 at the Sky 72 Golf Club.

Ko parred the first 11 holes, before birdying the 12th. She recorded an eagle on the 15th, but backed that up with a bogey on the following hole.

She trails Japan's Nasa Hataoka by five shots.
