A stunning final round hasn't been enough to see Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko steal victory at her latest LPGA Tour event in Shanghai on Sunday (NZ time).

In tricky conditions, the 21-year-old shot a final round a six-under 66 to finish the tournament in a seven-way tie for second, two shots off winner Danielle Kang of America.

Ko started the final round 20th, six shots off the pace, but her solid round of seven birdies and one bogey lifted her into contention.

She got to within one shot of the lead, but Kang held her nerve to win her second LPGA title.

It was Ko's third top-five finish of the year after her win in the Mediheal Championship in April and third placing in the Meijer LPGA Classic in June.

"I tried my best out there, and it was pretty tough with the wind on the first hole," she said.

"It was a little breezier than it was forecast to be and with some of the pin positions, it was going to be a tough day out there.

"I tried to make as many birdies as I can and give myself good opportunities. I felt like I played solid, especially down the stretch, and it was nice to finish strong."

The second place finish sees Ko pocket NZ$154,000.
