Mitre 10 Cup: Old allies Wyatt Crockett, Luke Romano face off in semi-final

Wyatt Crockett and Luke Romano have tasted plenty of rugby success together.

Romano has lost count of how many scrums he's packed down behind his old mate.

The duo has teamed up for eight provincial titles, two Super Rugby championships and, as All Blacks,  one Rugby World Cup.

On Friday night, they'll be eyeing each other up from across the tunnel, as Canterbury take on Tasman in the Mitre 10 Cup premiership semi-final.

"I'm sure I'll be giving Crocky a bit of chat," chuckles Romano.

The pair first played for Canterbury together in 2009, but Crockett's made the move north to finish his career with Tasman.

Now they face off in a repeat of last year's final. Will that be a bit weird?

"Not really, because we train together with the Crusaders," says Crockett. "We're pretty used to running against each other…  and winding him up.

"I've got a lot of mates in the Canterbury side, so this one is particularly special. I'm looking forward to it."

The 35-year-old prop's still held in high regard in the Garden City.

"He's a hell of a man," says Canterbury coach Joe Maddock. "I think he's led that group well and a lot of those young guys have stepped up and followed him."

Between them Tasman and Canterbury, will field a whopping 15 Crusaders players at Trafalgar Park - the South Island derby often billed as big brother vs little brother.

The Mako no longer see themselves as the 'small union'.

"'Favourites' is just an opinion of somebody's," dismisses Tasman coach Leon MacDonald.

Says Crockett: "This team is a different team and as long as we play our best game, we have what it takes to get the job done."

Crockett is primed to get one over his older brother.
