Mitre 10 Cup: Tasman crush Otago to top premiership ladder

  • 08/10/2018

Tasman climbed to the top of the Mitre 10 Cup premiership standings, after a comprehensive 47-21 win over Otago in Dunedin on Sunday.

The Mako ran in seven tries to Otago's three to claim their eighth win of the season.

Tasman raced out to a 28-0 halftime, as first-five Mitch Hunt, hooker Andrew Makalio, fullback Will Jordan and midfielder David Havili all scored for the visitors.

Otago finally crossed the line in the second half through Matt Faddas, but it wasn't enough to rein in the competition leaders, who added three more tries - two to Jordan and one to Tima Faingaanuku - after the break.

Otago grabbed two late tries through Sio Tomkinson and Slade McDowall.

The win took Tasman to 38 points on the table, ahead of Canterbury (37) and Auckland (36, with a game in hand).

Otago will face Waikato in Hamilton next Saturday in a Ranfurly Shield challenge, while Tasman host Hawke's Bay on Thursday night in Nelson.
