Netball: Silver Ferns coach Noeline Taurua seeks improvement for final test

Silver Ferns head coach Noeline Taurua isn't getting carried away with her first win over Australia on the international stage.

The NZ netball have finally got the monkey off their back, beating the Diamonds 55-44 in the third Constellation Cup test in Hamilton on Sunday.

The win snaps a nine-game losing streak against their rivals, dating back to last year.

It also gives them an outside chance of capturing the Constellation Cup for the first time since 2012, if they can beat Australia in the final test in Wellington on Thursday by 14 goals or more.

But Taurua insists her side still has plenty to improve on.

"There were some areas we improved from last week in Townsville," she said. "Things are starting to come together.

"But a win is always good for us and for the soul, and it's a good start.

"Great improvements from where we were and it's great to get the [win] on the board, [but] time will tell whether we can back ourselves up."

Ferns captain Laura l Langman was pleased to get the win in front of a New Zealand crowd, after 57-42 and 56-47 defeats in the opening two tests in Australia.

"It's really nice and there is no place like home to [win again]," said Langman. "I think the fans enjoyed it as much as we did.

"But ultimately, for us, it reinforces the work that we're putting in and that we're on the right track."

New Zealand's goal shooter Maria Folau was on fire, scoring at 98 percent (40/41), but defender Jane Watson was named player of the match.

The Silver Ferns won every quarter, but were especially dominant in the fourth, which they took 14-8.

Taurua has one eye on the fourth and final test, but the other on next year's World Cup in July in Liverpool, England.

Her gameplan is starting to come to fruition right now, but she wants to use the upcoming offseason to make her players even fitter and stronger.

"It's within our grasp to not only win the [final], but also the Cup as well, so I'm absolutely wrapt that we're still in the game, but we've got to be able to put it into action.

"We've been able to build a base, but we need to look at other players that will strengthen that base.

"Conditioning is something I want to improve on. With our gameplay, we need fit players and repeated efforts will be required every time on the court.

"There is so much upside for us."
