Rugby: Auckland's Jacob Umaga following in family's footsteps

With the riches of European rugby luring plenty of Kiwi talent offshore, it's not often you see players come the other way.

Auckland utility Jacob Umaga's done just that, leaving his family in England to play in New Zealand for a chance to follow in his family's footsteps.

With a last name like Umaga, Jacob's always had big boots to fill.

His father Mike played fullback for Samoa, and his Uncle Tana doesn't need much introduction.

Umaga admits that his family name weighs heavily on his shoulders.

"It's tough when you've got some fans trying to heckle you saying they know who your dad is know who your uncle is," Umaga told Newshub.

But Jacob's quickly starting to establish his own name in rugby circles.

Born and bred in England, he starred for their Under 20s earlier this year and was subsequently given a chance by his Wasps club to head down under.

"It's kind of like a dream come true in a way, just to follow in my uncle's footsteps playing over here, and my dad as well.

He's doing more than just following in uncle Tana's footsteps, he's living with him.

It's the ideal opportunity for Jacob to learn about his heritage and pick the former All Black captain's brain.

"Just around the dinner table or if rugby's on TV I'll ask him 'what did you see here?' or 'what would you do here?'…ask him about his past experiences as well as what he's learnt and what he's got from the game."

Originally, Jacob was only meant to be a part of Auckland's Development program.

But a strong season in club rugby earned him promotion to the Mitre 10 Cup.

"Credit to him more than anything, because he was under pressure to perform and he's come and taken a club to the semi-final with Eden," said Auckland coach Alama Ieremia. "He's earned the right to be selected."

He's eligible to be selected for England, Samoa and New Zealand but hasn't yet made a decision on who he'd want to play for.

For now, his focus is on next week's final and then going home.

"He's already sad he has to leave in a couple of weeks, so we might have to try and find a way to get him back," added Ieremia.

The answer could lie with Uncle Tana – has he offered his nephew a Blues contract?

"No, he hasn't he hasn't. He definitely hasn't," confirmed Jacob.

No contract, but a career's worth of experience that's sure to hold him in good stead.
