Rugby: Black Ferns Sevens beat USA in final of opening tournament of 2018-19 season

The Black Ferns Sevens have won the opening tournament of the 2018-19 World Rugby Women's Sevens World Series in Glendale, Colorado.

New Zealand beat the USA 33-7 in an entertaining final on Monday (NZ time).

The USA scored the first try of the final when Nicole Heavirland found her way over the line.

New Zealand quickly struck back to claim the lead courtesy of a Portia Woodman brace of tries, and  Sarah Goss added another to give the Kiwis a 21-7 lead at the break.

Niall Williams then sealed the win midway through the second-half when she scored New Zealand's fourth try. Woodman then rounded out her hat-trick of ties in the final minute.

Earlier on Monday, the world champion Kiwis beat Canada 28-19 in the semi-finals to earn their spot in the final.

Woodman scored a double in the win over Canada while Goss and Shakira Baker also scored.

They also beat Ireland in the quarter-finals, winning 34-7.

Michaela Blyde scored a hat-trick against the Irish with Kelly Brazier, Sarah Goss and Theresa Fitzpatrick all finding the try-line against the Irish.

The next tournament will take place in Dubai, on November 29-30.
