Rugby League: Kiwis perform stirring haka for Liverpool FC

  • 31/10/2018

The Kiwis had a chance put on a show for one of the planet's most famous football clubs on Wednesday (NZ time).

The squad trained at English Premier League heavyweight Liverpool's Melwood headquarters, before lunching and rubbing shoulders with the footballers, then captivating them with an explosive performance of their pre-match haka.

It's the second time a New Zealand side has made the trip to Merseyside, after Stephen Kearney's squad made a similar trip in 2015.

"What a sight," declared Liverpool's Twitter page.

"The haka is always special to witness, especially in the canteen at Melwood."

Among the Liverpool players left aghast were star Egyptian striker Mohammad Salah and Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri.

Manager Jurgen Klopp was also on hand, the German swapping souvenir jerseys with Kiwis coach Michael Maguire.

Klopp explained how the haka holds a special place in his heart, going back to his first days as a manager with Bundesliga side Mainz 05.

"I love the intensity," said Klopp."When we drove in the bus to the stadium, the last two minutes was always the haka.

"As we opened the bus door and headed into the stadium, you could hear the last few words of it. It helped us a lot and put us in a pretty special mood.

"We used it for two or three years, so I'm always happy when I can hear it, especially live. It's a very interesting experience.

"It's my favourite. I love it.

“I can only recommend it to everybody. If you've never seen it before, you have to."

The Kiwis will look to square their test series against England in Liverpool on Monday morning.
