Tongan duo Jason Taumalolo and Sio Siua Taukeiaho have been shortlisted for the prestigious Rugby League International Federation's (RLIF) Golden Boot award.

The award recognises the most outstanding performances in full international matches throughout the year.

Taumalolo and Taukeiaho were both influential players during last year's World Cup for Tonga, and carried that form through 2018.

Roosters forward Taukeiaho was arguably Tonga's best during the 36-16 defeat to Australia last weekend, running the ball for 200 metres.

They've been shortlisted alongside Australia trio Boyd Cordner, James Tedesco and Valentine Holmes.

The RLIF also announced it would present a women's Golden Boot award for the first time since the men’s award was handed out in 1984.

Kiwi Ferns co-captain Honey Hireme is one of four players shortlisted, alongside Jillaroos trio Ali Brigginshaw, Brittany Breayley and Isabelle Kelly.

More names will be added to the list after this weekend's New Zealand vs England test, with the list reduced to four before the winner is announced on November 7 in Leeds.

Four New Zealanders have previously won the men's award - High McGahan (1987), Stacey Jones (2003), Benji Marshall (2010) and Shaun Johnson (2014).

Australian Cameron Smith won the award for the second time last year.

Meanwhile, Tonga's captain Sika Manu has announced his retirement from international football.

Manu committed to Tonga in 2013, after played 14 tests for the Kiwis - including the final at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

He informed Tongan players and coach Kristian Woolf after the loss to Australia.
