UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after his title defence over Conor McGregor at UFC 229.

Nurmagomedov and father Abdulmanap were flown first class to visit the Russian leader in the city of Ulyanovsk.

The Russian (27-0) beat McGregor (21-4) in a fourth-round submission, but following the win, he jumped out of the Octagon, sparking a melee.

McGregor's team had reportedly been trash-talking Nurmagomedov, which infuriated the unbeaten 30-year-old.

Nurmagomedov has since apologised for his actions, and said his father and trainer would "smash me when I get home".

"I will ask your father not to punish you too strictly, because you achieved the main task, worthily and convincingly," said Putin.

Meanwhile, McGregor has been suspended for a month on medical grounds, after the defeat.
