Basketball: Tall Blacks coach isn't concerned about easier route to Basketball World Cup

Tall Blacks coach Paul Henare has no concerns his team will be left underdone if they qualify for next year Basketball World Cup.

Friday night's 95-69 win against Jordan was their eighth straight victory.

Henare sees the easy ride as a positive not a negative.

Tom Vodanovich was on top of the world today still beaming after making his Tall Blacks debut.

"It's always something I've been striving for but I didn't think it would be happening this year." Vodanovic said.

He became the 20th player used by Henare in the past 15 months.

Squad depth is one of a number of advantages of the new qualifying route through Asia

"Regular games, regular competition, more experience for all our guys over the calendar year has been fantastic" Henare said.

What it has also meant has been regular wins.

Friday night's 25 point victory against Jordan was their eighth on the bounce, Tall Blacks coaching great Tab Baldwin preferred the old route to the World Champs

"All games prepare to some degree but hard games prepare you much better," Baldwin said.

New Zealand got those hard games when they qualified via Oceania, testing themselves against European opposition before playing off against Australia for two available spots.

"It's not really about preparation for the world cup it's about qualifying and so for us it's about getting the results which we're after that get us there.

"It's all good experience because each team and each region of the world offers a different style and for us it helps develop the way that we want to play as well." Henare said.

He'll get another chance to do that against Syria on Sunday, a side they beat by 41 points in September.
