The Blackcaps have some work to do if they are to post a respectable first innings score in the first test match against Pakistan.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat at Abu Dhabi.

Mohammad Abbas made the breakthrough for the hosts in the 11th over after Jeet Raval edged one through to keeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

Tom Latham was the next to go, after putting in the hard work with the new ball he chipped one straight to Mohammad Hafeez off the bowling of Yasir Shah.

The leg spinner got the third for the hosts shortly after, removing Ross Taylor for two.

Captain Kane Williamson (40) and Henry Nicholls (15) look to spearhead the comeback after lunch.

The Blackcaps are 81/3 at the break.
