Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson has confirmed he will play in the first test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, starting Friday night.

The 28-year-old was unavailable for the final one-day international in Dubai, due to a minor groin strain. His absence did not damage his side, as the match was abandoned rained out.

He had a couple of light days in training, but said he would be ready for what he expects to be an extremely challenging three-test series.

"It's OK," he said. "Obviously, I've had a few more days off without playing that last one-dayer, so it's had a bit of time to heal and should be fine for tomorrow.

"Coming into Pakistan's home series, naturally, there is a lot of work to do for the overseas side to adapt to the conditions, but it is a fresh series.

"We had a great series last time we were here, but that's a long time back. A lot has changed in terms of personnel since then.

"I think it's important that we adapt with this inexperienced side that we have come with. Obviously, they [Pakistan] had a successful time against Australia, so it's important we try to take some of those lessons and play our best cricket."

Williamson and coach Gary Stead will wait until the toss to confirm their starting XI for the first test.

Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel or Auckland's Will Sommerville could be in line for a debut, if Williamson and Stead opt to select two spin bowlers.

Play begins on day one of the first test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi at 7pm (NZ time).
