Cricket: Former Blackcaps captain thinks White Ferns are heavily underperforming

A former Blackcaps captain is slating the current state of the White Ferns.

It comes after the side lost their first two games of the Women's T20 World Cup to India and Australia.

The two losses meant the Ferns were unable to make it to the next stage of the tournament.

After beating Pakistan in their third match they now face Ireland in a dead rubber on Sunday (NZT).

Ken Rutherford told Brendan Telfer on RadioLIVE's Saturday Sport that the Kiwi side have severely underperformed at this tournament.

"You would’ve thought playoffs would’ve been the minimum expectations," he said.

"We keep getting told how good they are in terms of having one or two of the best female batsmen and female bowlers in the world but there are clearly some issues behind the scenes."

Rutherford said the team has been backed by different people but aren’t delivering on their end.

"They need to look at all the resources put into women's cricket, now New Zealand cricket should be expecting a greater return in terms of results.

"Maybe the high-performance guys at NZ cricket should make some calls; they are a side that should be number three or four in the world."

"They clearly can't bat as well as they believe they can, they can't seem to bowl that well either."

The White Ferns play their third and final pool game against Ireland on Sunday at 9 am (NZT).
