New Zealand Cricket spin coach Paul Wiseman has praised the country's development of spin bowlers over recent years.

Spin bowler Ajaz Patel produced a man-of-the-match performance on debut for the Black Caps in their nail-biting win over Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

The first match of the three-test series saw the Blackcap spinners take 10 wickets over the two innings, led by seven from Patel.

Wiseman was rapt with the performance from the 30 year-old.

"The thing that impressed me the most was his composure under pressure, and his ability to control line and length throughout, and those two things can hold him in good stead for the future."

Wiseman said Patel was a product of the development system and worked hard to come through the ranks.

"Over the last few years, he's bowled a lot for Central Districts, he's bowled big spells.

"With the wickets he's been taking domestically, he was named in the winter training squad and played in the New Zealand A series in the UAE.

"It couldn't have been a better lead-up."

Wiseman said the bowling stocks in New Zealand right now are the best they've ever been.

"If you look at our bowling, the pace is the strongest it's ever been, so is our spin," he said.

"We've got Mitch Santner, Todd Astle, Mark Craig, Ajaz Ptel and Ish Sodhi, and just new to the group is Will Summerville."

The Blackcaps are preparing for the same conditions in the second test.

"We all saw the first test it turned a lot and we aren't expecting anything different here in Dubai," he said.

"We are expecting to face a lot of spin and our boys to bowl a lot of overs."

The second test between the Blackcaps and Pakistan starts at 7pm (NZT) Saturday.
