The 'Young Football Ferns' have been soundly beaten by Ghana in their final match of pool play at the Under 17 Women's Football World Cup in Uruguay.

The 'Black Stars' emerged 2-0 winners in Montevideo after a brace by Mukarama Abdulai ended the New Zealanders hopes of three-straight wins following their historic victory over the hosts on Saturday.

The loss means New Zealand finish second in Group A and will advance to the knockout phase - ahead of Finland and Uruguay - to take on Japan.

Ghana had all the running in the in the first half, creating a multitude of scoring opportunities that they couldn't quite complete as the NZ defence hustled well.

They eventually broke the deadlock in the 61st minute as Abdulai finished from the top of the box off a pinpoint long pass.

The New Zealanders continued to fight hard through the remainder of the contest but despite a few threatening plays from setpiece, couldn't find the back of the net.

Abdulai then stepped to the fore again with an outstanding strike to kill off the contest with just minutes remaining.
