Hockey: Black Sticks score crucial World Cup win over France

  • 30/11/2018

The Black Sticks have made a positive start to their Hockey World Cup campaign, after overcoming France 2-1 at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India.

The 2-1 victory over the 20th ranked Frenchmen is vital if New Zealand are to advance out of their tough pool.

Kane Russell put the New Zealanders in front in the first half with a 16th minute strike, and man-of-the-match Stephen Jenness powered home a crucial second goal late in the 56th minute.

The French underdogs were right in the match until then, and were eventually rewarded with a consolation goal in the 59th minute through captain Victor Charlet.

They face second-ranked Argentina next up on Tuesday (NZ time), who edged Spain4-3, in their tournament opener.
