NRL: Australia great Paul Gallen 'surprised' by mooted Shaun Johnson move

One of the NRL's biggest names is backing Shaun Johnson to be a welcome addition to any club across the Tasman, if he leaves the Warriors.

Johnson's off contract next year and has been subject of speculation about his future in Auckland.

But Sharks and Australia great Paul Gallen is in no doubt that Johnson would be a star in Australia, wherever he may end up.

Johnson's proved a polarising figure at the Warriors, but Gallen can't believe he could be on his way out.

"I'm pretty surprised, like everybody else, that he's been offered up to the open market," Gallen told Newshub. "I think he's a superstar player."

On Wednesday, the Australian was on hand to watch his horse Te Akau Shark win in Christchurch and he believes it'd be a massive win for any Aussie club, if they could snare the Warriors playmaker.

"I think he's a great player. He's a very marketable player and he's the type of player you want at your club."

The Canberra Raiders have already shown an interest and Gallen is in no doubt there'll be plenty more keen on Johnson's signature.

"I'd be surprised if he left the Warriors. He's a Kiwi born and bred, and that's his best fit."

If the Warriors management don't agree, Johnson may have to try and fit in elsewhere.
