One of the New Zealand Warriors front-row enforcers has left the club to join the Newcastle Knights.

The Auckland-based NRL club has released 29-year-old James Gavet from the final year of his contract, with a two-year deal waiting for him at the Knights.

Warriors CEO Cameron George said the club wouldn't stand in Gavet's way and thanked him for his service over the last three years.

"James has been a good servant of this club and always gave it his all on the footy field," he said.

The Samoan international posted a cryptic social media post on Thursday, suggesting his time in Auckland had come to an end.

"Thanks for the ride fam OUTTA-HERE !!! DONE & DONE," Gavet's Instagram post read.

NZME reports Gavet was dropped from the club’s final regular-season game of 2018, after he was late to training and a couple of club functions celebrating the career of Simon Mannering.

Gavet played 42 games in three seasons with the club, including 19 last season.
