Off-contract NRL star Jarryd Hayne has handed himself into police over an allegation of sexual assault.

New South Wales Police confirmed to Channel 9 that Hayne was being interviewed by detectives on Monday over the allegation, after turning himself in to Sydney's Ryde Police Station.

Hayne is being investigated, after a woman alleged she suffered injuries during a sexual encounter with him on NRL Grand Final night on September 30.

The woman alleges she and Hayne had been in contact on social media, and Hayne had travelled to a house in the Hunter region to meet her.

Police confirmed detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad were leading an investigation into reports a woman was sexually assaulted by a 30-year-old man in late September, Channel 9 reports.

The former Parramatta Eels player, who endured a testing stint in American Football's NFL between 2015/16, is not currently signed to a club next season.
