Rugby league: Cronulla Sharks circle in on Shaun Johnson

The Cronulla Sharks have reportedly emerged as favourites to secure the services of unwanted Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson.

Johnson approached Warriors chief executive Cameron George and coach Stephen Kearney on Tuesday, after it was revealed the Auckland-based club was unlikely to offer the playmaker a contract beyond 2019.

He was then granted an immediate release from the Warriors on Wednesday, ending an eight-year relationship with the club.

The Sharks immediately emerged as the favourites to snap up the playmaker, with space in their salary cap available, after the departure of Valentine Holmes, who is moving to the US to try to crack the NFL.

Johnson's arrival would allow him to partner Chad Townsend in the halves, while Matt Moylan would return to fullback in Holmes' absence.

The deal is likely to only be for the 2019 season, however Wide World of Sports reports he has already come to terms for a club for 2020 - likely the Sydney Roosters.

"With Val leaving over the last few weeks, there is a good chance as they have some money in the salary cap," former NRL player and current Fox Sports commentator Brett Kimmorley told Newshub.

"He's spent time playing in the halves with Chad Townsend a few years ago, so there would be an excellent opportunity for him there. He's a great player and exciting to watch."

Kimmorley feels the Warriors have taken a massive risk in releasing the playmaker at this time of year.

"I don't think there are too many quality halves that are on the market right now. It is a massive move to make, without a ball being kicked in the 2019 season.

"It might leave them in a hole and they might regret this decision when the season starts.

"But they believe they can get someone and save some money, and someone they believe is better suited for the team."
