Rugby League: Kevin Proctor shortlisted for Kiwis Player of the Year

  • 29/11/2018

A year after being axed from the NZ Kiwis for cocaine use, Kevin Proctor has been shortlisted for the 2018 Kiwis Player of the Year Award.

Along with Melbourne Storm clubmate Jesse Bromwich, Proctor was not considered for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, when the pair were filmed using cocaine after the Kiwis' Anzac Test loss to the Kangaroos in Canberra.

That decision proved costly, as the Kiwis tumbled out in the quarter-finals loss to Fiji.

But the pair were recalled by new coach Michael Maguire for last month's one-off test against Australia and the Kiwis tour of England. Proctor played 80 minutes in three of the four tests and 69 minutes in the other.

The 29-year-old has been shortlisted alongside NZ skipper Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and veteran prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

Finalists have been named in all 13 NZRL Awards categories, including Kiwi Ferns Player of the Year, which will be hotly contested by Kiwi Ferns co-captain Honey Hireme, NRLW Grand Final Player of the Match Kimiora Nati and powerhouse prop Aieshaleigh Smalley.

Kiwis debutants Joseph Manu, Ken Maumalo and Dally M Rookie of the Year Jamayne Isaako will face-off for the Kiwis Rookie of the Year award.

Last year's Junior Player of the Year, Isaiah Papali'i, will look to defend his title against South Sydney Rabbitohs junior Mawene Hiroti, as well as Warriors youngster Joseph Vuna.
