It's advantage Shane Van Gisbergen in the battle of the Kiwi flyers after the qualifying session for race one of the final round of the Supercars Championship.

The Red Bull Holden driver pipped teammate Jamie Whincup for pole with Championship rival Scott McLaughlin third and Fabian Coulthard fourth at the Newcastle street circuit.

McLaughlin had been fastest after the first two runs of the 20-minute session, however, Van Gisbergen found the extra time he needed on his third run, crossing the line in a time of 1:10.6430, 0.167 seconds in front of Whincup, whose last lap relegated the Shell V-Power driver to third.

With a slim Championship lead of just 14-points, a win for Van Gisbergen and anything less than a second place for his fellow Kiwi will see the 2016 champion regain the series lead heading into Sunday's finale.

The other two Kiwis were off the pace with Nissan's Andre Heimgartner and Ford's Richie Stanaway starting on the back row.

Green flag drops for today's race at 5.45pm.
